Interview between our doll, Malika Cox and the Hope Center in the province of Kampong Cham, Cambodia.
1. Tell us about how you discovered the horrible atrocities of human trafficking going on in S.E. Asia?
We first learned about this horrible crime against innocent children from Allison’s best friend who is Vietnamese. Her parents immigrated to the United States more than 30 years ago so she was born American but still has family in Vietnam. She learned about human trafficking and educated us on what was happening in Southeast Asia and around the world.
2. How many trips have you been on?
We have traveled to Cambodia in 2007, 2008 and will return this July 2009. In 2007, our church – Church of the Harvest – partnered with Joyce Meyer Ministries to build three orphanages, called “Hope Centers,” in Cambodia (the three Hope Centers are fully funded by Church of the Harvest and Joyce Meyer is funding operating costs for the next 20 years. There were many more Hope Centers funded by other organizations and churches around the world as well). We were able to meet the children and leaders running the Hope Centers and have since built lifelong bonds with them. They, along with other incredible organizations like New Life Fellowship in the capital city of Phnom Penh, International Crisis Aid and Hagar International, work to bring recovery and restoration to exploited, destitute and rejected women and children. It is estimated every year 1.2 million children are trafficked for sex around the world and Cambodia is one of the leading countries.
3. What was the most impacting experience you had on these trips?
It seems impossible to say one thing. It is showering love and attention on little girls who have lived in horror and demonstrating what pure love looks like; it is kicking a soccer ball with little boys who were abandoned on the streets but now have a home in a Hope Center we helped to build and believing they will grow up and change the generations that come after them; the looks on the faces of those we are able to bless; sharing the love of Jesus with the hopeless; ultimately, it’s knowing we are doing what we can to make a difference.
4. What organizations have you partnered with?
Church of the Harvest (www.harvestokc.com), New Life Ministries (http://www.cambodiaoutreach.org/) , Hagar International (http://www.hagarproject.org/), International Crisis Aid (http://www.crisisaid.org/) and other local churches.
5. What are your plans to go back?
We will return this July 27 – Aug 13, 2009, and are so excited to go back! To read more about our experience, please visit our blog at www.andyandalimorris.blogspot.com or to view photos please go to http://flickr.com/photos/12115303@N06/. Because of the sensitive nature of the girls who have been rescued from the sex trafficking rings, we cannot post photos of the girls.
